Second Life Fashion Model Resource: East Asian Skins in Second Life

"I want to look Asian!" I've heard this quite often from friends and acquaintances in Second Life when they ask me for help or suggestions on improving their avatars' looks. And by Asian, they usually meant small eyes and porcelain skin; like how Chinese or Japanese people in real life look.

The nerd in me would sometimes want to say, do you mean East Asian or another kind of Asian? Because well, people from Malaysia, India, Saudi Arabia, Syria, etc. are Asians too and they don't necessarily have those same features. But then I realize that line can open up to a lengthy discussion on geography and world history which may or may not interest the person I'm speaking to. :p

In any case, if you're into this particular kind of look (East Asian), you most probably found it difficult to look for good quality skins that help you achieve this specific look. I know, because I've done my fair share of skin shopping and hopping! :) You see, I'm half Filipino and half Chinese in real life but I relate to the East Asian look more; and so I decided I want to look East Asian in SL too. Anyway, this post is meant to help others like me who are looking for well-made East Asian skins which look realistic, and not the anime-ish or manga-looking kind.

The skin I'm wearing here is called Miru from Tokyo Girl, which is one of the first stores I've bought shapes and skins from when I was starting out in SL. They are really good, though I had to let go of my Tokyo Girl shape long ago because they're sold non-mod and I couldn't upsize my petite avatar to become a model. :p But if you're looking for very good East Asian skins, Tokyo Girl is a good place to go. By the way, Miru is available at the Skin Fair event which opens tomorrow, March 15. So it might be a good idea to check it out this month, especially if you're up for a little skin makeover. :)

Other places you'd like to check out too:
Deesse's - look for Yoshe skin
Lara Hurley - look for Aiko skin
Amacci - look for Nuiko skin (also available at the Skin Fair)
Pink Fuel - look for Kumi skin
Belleza - look for Aiko skin
Tuli - look for Sayuri skin (thanks to Cecelia Levee for the tip)
Adam N Eve - look for Meili (thanks to Ona Ostenvaag for the tip) and Hanako skins

If there is a skin store you think should be on this list but isn't, please feel free to drop me a line at the comment area below. I'd love to check it out and see if we could add it to this list. I hope this helps people and saves time from skin hunting in some way. :)

  2. Adam N Eve has a nice skin called Mei Li that also works. Also, I've found in my quest for a nice asian avatar, that it's not just the skin. You really have to pay attention to the shape too, not just slide the sliders of the outside eye corner all the way up like some people do. For a good Chinese/Japanese avatar, the upper bridge of the nose will be a bit flatter, the eyes a bit smaller, the face a bit rounder..etc. :)

(On a side note, where I'm from, the word 'chink' (and in relation 'chinky') is used as a derogatory word for Chinese, much like the 'n' word is for African Americans. Just a heads up. :) )

    1. Thanks for the suggestion and very cool inputs, Ona! :) Sorry I didn't know about that but I'm glad you told me. You just saved me from getting beat up if I ever find myself in your side of the woods. LOL! :p
